Student Reflection

by Robert Kraichely

The Gospel of Saint Mark tells a story of a man who comes to Jesus having lived his life in accordance with the commandments of the Old Testament. He sincerely asks Jesus what he must additionally do to reach God's kingdom. In reply, Jesus tells the man that he must give up his possessions and come follow the Lord.

Those individuals we commemorate encountered a difficult dilemma as they faced their own mortality. Unlike the man in Mark's Gospel, these men and women did not turn their back to Jesus and walk away. They chose to give their last true physical possessions, their bodies, to further the study of medicine. By responding to Jesus' call to let go and come with Him, these individuals performed acts which are truly honorable and holy in God's eyes.

We pray together that the memory of these loved will not be lost, nor their generous gifts be wasted. We should bear in mind that the souls of these men and women are with us, and we pray that they may continue to inspire us friends, relatives, and students. We ask for God's blessing on the families and friends of the donors that they may have strength through these difficult times. Finally, we ask for the insight to realize that the selfless generosity of the donors serves as the greatest lesson for the medical students of Saint Louis University.
