know the layers of the abdominal wall!!!
How was the driving and parking?
Do you think you will have trouble with parking or traffic @ 4 or 5 am????
How bad were the on call hours?
Home call at VA, never got called in. Trauma - stay up all night, some ER/OR time, mostly babysit patients in radiology.
What were your weekday hours?
Trauma: presound, resident rounds, attending rounds, maybe lunch, lecture, check on pts, home, eat sleep, start over. VA: no big deal.
What were your weekend hours?
Trauma:you can leave after resident rounds if post call. Usually out by lunch
What should we know about the attendings and residents?
Trauma attendings will not know who you are. Try to get along with the residents, they are really not that bad. Except D. R.- intern
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
How to pull drains!!. Some suturing of lacerations in the ER.
What books were useful for the shelf exam?
Recall, Pretest
How was your shelf exam?
6/10
Did you have enough time to study for it?
NO!!!, try to use your time at the VA wisely. It is really easy to waste time there even if you are not busy.
What pearls of wisdom should an incoming student ABSOLUTELY know?
Keep an open mind. It doesn't have to be as bad as you have heard. Don't take anything personally. Go out and party post-call!!
How would you rate the stress level?

Trauma was fun - I had a good team. The VA is simply unpleasant.
