no, it's just a class in the am
on how to wash your hands
How was the driving and parking?
SLU-typical. VA-behind the
hospital,
not too bad.
How bad were the on call hours?
Trauma-you could be up all
night,
or you could go to bed at 10. Unpredicatble, brutal at
times. VA-none.
What were your weekday hours?
Trauma-preround at 5:30, round at
6:30.
Carry around 4 patients. Depending on the attending, round again from
9-12 or so. Afternoon
class at 3, or clinic, (OR go home). VA- round at 7. Operations are few
and far between.
What were your weekend hours?
Come in based on call
schedule. If
you're post-call, round and go home.
What should we know about the attendings and residents?
Cool but
moody.
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
Suturing, chest
tubes,
drains, stapling, line placement
What books were useful for the shelf exam?
Recall, NMS, Pretest
How was your shelf exam?
8/10
Did you have enough time to study for it?
Yes, VA hours are very
reasonable
What pearls of wisdom should an incoming student ABSOLUTELY know?
Trauma/VA does VERY LITTLE operating. I scrubbed in 6 times in 8
weeks. Cool stuff in
the ER, but if you want a lot of OR time, look elsewhere.
How would you rate the stress level?
tolerable
