How bad were the on call hours?
Transplant: Yes, Q2. When on
regular
call, I was up almost all night, almost every call. I was never called in
for harvest
call, although other team members were. I had to stay all night twice
when I wasn't on
call also.
St. Mary's: Cake. Rounds last 2 or 3 hours, then study or sleep until
your surgery comes
up.
What were your weekday hours?
Transplant: pre-round 3:30-6:30
or
7:00. Round 7:00 to 1:00 to 3:00PM. Clinics on tuesdays and thursdays.
Lecture 3:00-5:00
everyday. Surgery whenever your turn comes up. Usually home by 7-8PM
when not on call.
St.Mary's: preround 4:30-6:30. Round 6:30-9:00. Nothing to do until
surgeries come up.
What were your weekend hours?
Same as weekday hours. 4 days off
per 4 weeks.

St.Mary's: The residents are great. You can learn alot. Just keep you
mouth shut around
the physicians and you will be alright. Beware Dr.V
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
Transplant: I
sutured
more times than I can count, I assisted in paracentesis, thoracentesis, I
put in foleys,
NG-tubes, removed JP drains, and much more.
St.Marys: No

Pre-test, recall.

If you have transplant
first, yes. If you have transplant second, no.
What pearls of wisdom should an incoming student ABSOLUTELY know?
For transplant: Embrace you type-A self, and all will be well.
For St. Mary's: Relax and study
