Also, forget about your stethoscope.

How bad were the on call hours?
On-call?
What were your weekday hours?
Started around 8:30am, no
pre-rounding, and got out around 5pm, sometimes as late as 6:30pm if we
were busy. There were days when we did absolutely nothing.
What were your weekend hours?
The same as anyone else who was
NOT working weekends!
What should we know about the attendings and residents?
They are
absolutely wonderful, laidback, and patient. Let them know when you need
help.
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
Got really good at
the mental status exam.
What books were useful for the shelf exam?
Blue Prints. That's
it. Nothing more. Don't waste your money on anything else.

Did you have enough time to study for it?
Definitely, especially
on those days we did nothing at all.
What pearls of wisdom should an incoming student ABSOLUTELY know?
How to play with a giant slinky!! You should make sure you are
patient and listen to everything the pt. is saying. Let them talk. You'd
be surprised what they have to say.

C & L was great in that it exposed you to
almost every aspect of psychiatry. You got to see patients as they
presented with their disease, instead of seeing them already medicated and
coping well. It is more like what one would see in the clinic setting and
a better experience for those who are not interested in psychiatry.
