Almost
everything in peds is done based on the kids weight.
How was the driving and parking?
Typical SLU.
How bad were the on call hours?
On the floors, you take call
every
fourth night with you team, and every twelfth night you must stay
overnight. The team
will often keep you busy on call, but usually when they tell you to go get
some sleep,
they won't wake you up. Weekend calls are bonus since they are usually
slightly lighter.
What were your weekday hours?
On floors: Show up about 6-6:30
(depending
on patient load) and preround. Be sure to check for lab reports and
calculate I/O's.
Work rounds are at 7:30, followed by lecture and then attending rounds at
9:15. These
will vary in length by attending and patient load, but usually end around
11:00. Then,
you have one hour to write progress notes. Go to 12 noon lecture. After
lecture, you
will return to the floors to finish progress notes and assist if any
procedcures are being
done. You usually will go home 2:30-4:30. Sometimes later, and call
night will be till
9:30 at least. You should also be working on your H and P's. Try to
spend your time
on the floors doing H&P's and your time on the clinics doing study stuff.
What were your weekend hours?
One day on floors, off on clinics.
What should we know about the attendings and residents?
Overall,
very nice. Some like to teach more than others, and a few of the
residents get there
entertainment scutting you.
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
Help do a biopsy,
did
an LP.
What books were useful for the shelf exam?
Blueprints in
Pediatrics-all
you need to know for test.
Appelton&Lange Pediatrics-tough questions which are excellent prep for the
shelf.
Covers all important material in a manner somewhat more difficult than
shelf.
How was your shelf exam?
6/10
Did you have enough time to study for it?
Yeah, but that
requires
discipline if you have clinics first.
What pearls of wisdom should an incoming student ABSOLUTLY know?
As I have said previously, STUDY WHILE ON CLINICS. The floors are fun,
but the added
burden of H&P's and a presentation will limit your study time.
How would you rate the stress level?
tolerable
