How bad were the on call hours?
You can go 19 days straight at
least
12 hours/day w/o a day off which is pretty harsh but the rest of the time
you get weekends
off.
What were your weekday hours?
At St. Mary's it would be rounds
at
7:00 and then usually surgey until noon and then clinic or study time or
other things
in the afternoon. At St. John's it was L&D all day or all night
What were your weekend hours?
None except the 2 weekends in a
row
straight.
What should we know about the attendings and residents?
St.
John's
has really nice residents but they are really busy and St. Mary's, it all
depends.
Did you learn any new procedures or skills?
retraction :), tying
knots, delivering a baby. Ultrasounds. Pap smears, suturing if you were
lucky.
What books were useful for the shelf exam?
I studied NMS and did
pretty well but it was an overkill. Pre-test is not very helpful if you
haven't had internal
med. Most people used blueprints
